Even the chill of the harsh winter does not diminish the abundant flowering of the plum blossoms. The plum blossoms in all their charm bring with them the qualities of firmness and solidity. They have been loved throughout the history of China. In literature, the flower has been compared to the human personality.

In China, plum blossoms are most commonly used as decoration during the Chinese New Year. The blossoms are common subjects in Chinese art and are among the most beloved of Chinese flowers.

Unlike the Japanese, however, the Chinese see plum blossoms as more of a symbol for winter rather than a harbinger of spring. It is precisely for this reason that the blossoms are so beloved, because they bloom most vibrantly amidst the winter snow, after other plants have shed their leaves, and before any other flowers appear. The five petal blossoms represent new life at the end of winter. It is seen as bringing vigor and vitality to the world.

Thus, they are seen as an example of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity, and have also been used as a metaphor to symbolize revolutionary struggle, happiness and endurance in old age. Because they blossom in winter, the plum blossom, the pine, and the bamboo together have been called the "Three Friends of the Cold".

Apart from that, plum blossom is one of the Four Gentlemen in Chinese art (the others being orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo). This was because they were used to portray noble characteristics, such as pureness, humbleness, uprightness and refined beauty.

As they represent the four different seasons (the orchid for spring, the bamboo for summer, the chrysanthemum for autumn, and the plum blossom for winter), the four are used to depict the unfolding of the seasons through the year.
